After Hours Care
Support when you need it.
It seems like an unwritten rule that things happen on weekends or at night. Perhaps a bracket comes off or a wire becomes loose or causes irritation, and you wonder if it can wait until business hours or if it's really necessary to see us right away. We understand! Below is a list of things that, though uncommon, can happen, as well as some helpful tips for how to handle them at home. If you try these and still feel you need our help, all you have to do is call the office. We're always monitoring our calls and will get back to you as quickly as we can.
What constitutes an orthodontic emergency?
True orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues can wait until regular business hours. However, if you experience severe pain, significant trauma to the face or mouth, or a loose appliance that could be swallowed, please call us immediately.
When should I call for after-hours care?
Call us after hours if you experience severe pain that cannot be managed with over-the-counter pain medication, significant bleeding that won't stop, trauma to the face or teeth, or a swallowed or aspirated orthodontic appliance. For minor discomfort or loose brackets, try the home care tips below and call during regular business hours.
What should I do about a loose bracket?
If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If it's uncomfortable, cover with wax. If it comes out completely, bring it with you to the next appointment. Never connect elastics to a loose bracket.
What if I have a lost tie wire or elastic band?
Please call the office to ask if an appointment is necessary. Be sure to notify the assistant at your next appointment.
How can I manage soreness from braces?
Rinse with warm saltwater. If necessary, take the same pain reliever you would for a headache or muscle pain. Drinking or eating something cold can also provide temporary relief.
What should I do about a pokey wire or soft tissue irritation?
If you can cover the source of irritation (the wire end of the bracket) with orthodontic wax, this should get you through until we are open and can see you during business hours.
Can I trim a poking wire myself?
If a wire is poking and wax doesn't help, you can use clean nail clippers or small wire cutters to carefully clip the wire behind the last tooth it's attached to. Be careful not to accidentally swallow the piece. If you're uncomfortable doing this, call our office for guidance.
What if my aligner cracks or breaks?
If you're wearing clear aligners and one cracks or breaks, go back to wearing your previous set and call our office during business hours. Do not move forward to the next aligner without consulting us first.
Is orthodontic wax safe to swallow?
Yes, orthodontic wax is non-toxic and safe if accidentally swallowed. It's designed to be used in your mouth and will pass through your system without harm.
How do I reach you after hours?
Call our office number at (512) 883-8030. We monitor our calls 24/7, and Dr. Owen or a member of our team will return your call as quickly as possible to assess your situation and provide guidance.
